Gentle chimes ring through the streets as the activity heightens. In the distance, a seven piece pentatonic bass chime orchestra reverberates through the landscape. The installation complements the environment, rather than overpowering it, reflecting the rhythms and patterns of the atmosphere through a synesthetic transfer of movement into light and sound.
1) Hanging from the first floor, pedestrian movement
will set the wind catchers in motion. Each chime is
high pitched, but produces a soft chime due to its
length and size. However they make up for it in numbers.
As a result, the more movement in the space,
the louder the collective composition.
2) The path here widens significantly from a narrow street
to sweeping park land. Here the chimes float on water,
silent until the tide gently changes. They respond to the
gentle waves produced by wind moving through the
trees and ripples created by animals and falling leaves.
Each chime is tuned to one note in a pentatonic bass
scale. The bass sounds travel much greater distances
through air, and provides an auditory wayfinding node
through the festival spine.
