IDES2000 2016 - Making
A1 - Beginning
Before conceiving of an interactive spatial system students must be able to identify and examine systems that already exist within the built environment. Students will be encouraged to explore the campus to identify a potential site, document their spatial experience, and begin to imaging possiblities for intervention. Alongside this process will be research into case study projects that inspire curiosity and the desire for further investigation. The outcomes of this initial research will be presented and discussed within the studio to direct and develop ideas for assignment 2, and identify technical skills that will need to be learnt.
A2 - System
Once a site has been identified. Students will imagine, design, prototype, and build an interactive artefact that attempts to realise a system for altering the spatial qualities of the chosen site. The finished artifact could be considered as a modular component of a larger object, or as a single agent in a network of distributed agents. In producing their designs, students will be encouraged to experiment and develop multiple prototypes. The process of experimentation and prototyping will be documented in a short film that aims to communicate the intent of the project and the process of design experimentation.
A3 - Full Scale
From the projects in assignment 2, one system design will be chosen and developed into a full scale artifact to be constructed and then installed on site. The final object will be a refined and final product, building on the research and design development of the previous assignments, and pushing the concept towards the realisation of complex and novel spatial effects. The studio will work together to produce the final product with smaller groups being assigned to specific tasks (ie. design team, construction detailing, system design, programming, electronics, filming, drawing etc.). Once again a short film will be made of the design and making process.
